Senate: The Policymakers of GSB

The Senate acts as the legislative branch of GSB. The Senate meets every Wednesday night during the school year at 7:00 pm in the Memorial Union. During these meetings, the Senate discusses issues that affect the student body, including funding requests for student organizations, proposed policy changes either at the university level or at an external government level, and other topics that may come up from time to time.

Structure

The Senate is made up of 37 senators. About half of these senators represent the different colleges at ISU, while the other half represent residence areas. Representation is determined on a population basis, so larger colleges and residence areas are represented by a proportionally larger number of senators. Currently, the Senate can be broken down as follows:

Residence areas:
Off Campus (9 senators)
Inter-Residence Hall Association (4)
Campustown (2)
Frederiksen Court (1)
Inter-Fraternity Council (1)
Panhellenic Council (1)
Schilletter / University Village (1)
Colleges:
Liberal Arts and Sciences (4 senators)
Engineering (3)
Graduate College (3)
Agriculture (2)
Business (2)
Human Sciences (2)
Design (1)
Veterinary Medicine (1)

Each senator is elected to a one-year term by a popular vote of students in his or her constituency. In the event that a Senate seat becomes vacant during the year, the constituency council for that college or residence area must appoint a replacement who can serve until the next election.
