Cabinet Job Descriptions

Note: Only some of the cabinet positions are specified in the bylaws, making them mandatory. Other postions are created ad-hoc by the President and Vice-President each year and are subject to change.

President

Responsibilities: Serves as the official representative of students at Iowa State Univerisity. Works with ISU administration, Board of Regents, city officials, and others to accomplish initiatives, serve on committees, and create change. Appoints GSB members, including cabinet members, election commissioner, supreme court chief justice, ex-officio student council liasion, as well as student members of university and city committees. Signs GSB bills into law, or has the option to veto any legislation. Oversees the efficient administration of the GSB offices and staff.
Committees: Ames City Council Student Affairs Commission, Special Student Fee and Tuition Committee, many other committees as needed

Vice-President

Responsibilities: Is responsible for leading the GSB senate and chairing the meetings, and serves as an ex-officio member, voting only in case of ties. Assists the President in their duties, and succeeds the President if the position becomes vacant.
Committees: Special Student Fee and Tuition Committee, other committees as needed

Finance Director

Responsibilities: Is responsible for the efficient adminstration of the financial affairs of the senate, and is expected to be extremely familiar with Chapters 12 and 13 of the GSB Bylaws. Is an resource for Senate and oversees the Finance Committee. Works closely with student organizations, Campus Organizations Accounting, and other members of ISU Administration.
Committees: Head of Finance committee, Special Student Fee and Tuition Committee

Treasurer

Responsibilities: Serves as the chief financial officer of the executive branch, through assisting in implementing financial legislation from senate, and developing budgets for the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The treasurer also serves as the GSB representative to ASSET (Analysis of Social Services Evaluation Team).
Committees: Representative to ASSET committee, member of GSB Finance committee

Chief of Staff

Responsibilities: Develops, plans, and executes the executive branch initiatives, as well as assists the President in managing the Cabinet on a daily basis. This may include meeting individually with Cabinet members, collecting Cabinet updates, and helping to interview new Cabinet members. Also, prepares the agenda and keeps order at the weekly Cabinet meetings.
Committees: Usually several, but varies as needed by President.

Secretary

Responsibilities: Takes minutes at the cabinet meetings, and most importantly, comes up with fun roll call questions! Also responsible for all executive branch minutes and records, as well as taking on side projects as necessary, such as ordering GSB supplies to hand out to students.
Committees: As needed.

Director of Diversity

Responsbilities: Manages issues of student diversity on campus and in Ames, and serves as a liasion between GSB and multicultural students at Iowa State. Works with the Office of Multicultural Affairs to develop the Multicultural Center and any other university-wide projects on diversity. Coordinates GSB volunteers for events such as Race Against Racism and FACES, and develops programs to create interaction among cultural, religious, or otherwise diverse groups.
Committees: Serves on or appoints a representative to FACES committee, and serves on other committees as needed.

Director of Public Relations

Responsibilities: Works with all branches of GSB to develop media kits and press materials for various initiatives or public relations campaigns, and serves as the Executive representative to all print and broadcast media. Writes and sends news releases to the student body periodically each semester. Also, takes pictures at GSB events and creates yearly GSB t-shirt.
Committees: As needed.

Director of Information Technology

Responsibilities: Maintains GSB computer hardware and software, manages the computers and network in the GSB office, and works with all branches of GSB to create IT solutions.
Committees: serves on Computation Advisory Committee, which meets monthly to decide how to distribute student computer fees money.

Webmaster

Responsibilities: Updates and Maintains the GSB website and works with all branches of GSB to create IT solutions and publicize events on the website. Coordinates online surveys and university-wide emailings and works to maintain and improve LegMan.
Committees: As needed.

Director of Student Affairs

Responsibilities: Acts as a liaison between GSB and all campus administrative offices. Serves as the primary link to students serving on university and city committees, and monitors and investigates issues of everyday student life. Coordinates campus events and activities with GSB Director of Events.
Committees: Serves as a student member to Faculty Senate.

Director of Events

Responsibilities: Coordinates and plans GSB-sponsored events and activities, serves as an event resource for campus groups, and works with university administration to obtain all required authorization and information for events.
Committees: As needed.

Director of ISU Ambassadors

Responsibilities: Manages and works to expand the activities of the ISU Ambassadors, and serves as the link between ISU Ambassadors and the Executive Branch. Gains support and participation from GSB on events and issues of ISU Ambassadors such as Regents' Day at the Capitol and Capitol Orientation. Coordinates with the Director of Government Relations on legislative issues, and works on various initiatives such as legislative lobbying letter-writing campaigns.
Committees: As needed.

Director of Governmental Relations

Responsibilities: Acts as a liaison between local, state, and federal governments and agents and GSB, and apprises the President of actions of these governments that relate to tuition and funding for Iowa State. Attends Board of Regents meetings and other legislative meetings as necessary. Also, coordinates events and initiatives related to legislative relations and lobbying.
Committees: As needed.

Ex-Officio/City Council Liaison

Responsibilities: Liaison between Iowa State students and the city of Ames. Attends all City Council meetings and functions to have a better grasp on city issues that may affect students or vice versa. Works to promote student involvement within the city and education for students on city issues and departments that may be of use.
Committees: Student Affairs Committee.
